At our Meeting on October 1, 2013

I talked to Chris Oakman, VP - Chief Infrastructure Engineer at Eastridge one of the larger Microsoft Gold partners in our part of the state. He is going to come in and talk to us about Lync in SMB as well as partnering opportunities with Eastridge on Oct 1st. The GFIMAX team had a conflict and Chris was good enough to step up to the plate and bring us this valuable content at the last minute. GFIMAX has been rescheduled to our Nov 5th meeting, as a matter of fact I am waiting for a cab to take me back to the airport after attending their partner conference the last few days in Vegas. I got to sit with JR & Kay who are/were also here so we were well represented.

Our September Meeting is Canceled Due to Labor Day

I look forward to seeing you at our October meeting when we will have the team from GFI MAX in fresh from their partner conference to let us know about the new announcements made there. If you are interested in attending the conference details are at http://conferences.gfimax.com/2013/us/

At Our Meeting August 6, 2013
6:00pm to 9:00pm

We hope to have a special treat for your upcoming August meeting. I saw these pictures
Front view of 3d printer  side view 3d printer

Dick Snow posted on Facebook of his latest project "Building a 3D Printer" and asked him to bring it in and talk about the project and hopefully demo it. Well as things happen with these kind of projects he is waiting on some replacement parts that "should" be in Friday so we are on track for this to happen. Turns out that Thomas Deal also has built one and offered to bring in his as well, so we have a real good chance of at least one of them working for the meeting. Even if neither does it will be an interesting night hearing the guys discuss their projects and with a little luck we may even get a demo or two.

At Our Meeting July 2, 2013
6:00pm to 9:00pm

I thought that now that it is public we would take a first look at the Server 2012r2 Preview for our July meeting and what better place to look at the Essentials version of Server 2012 than on the just released HP MicroServer Gen8.
It looks to be a marriage made in IT Heaven!

If you want to grab a copy of Server 2012r2 to play with yourself it is available on MSDN and TechNet for download as of today.

What's New in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials - TechNet Library - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303448.aspx

Windows Server Essentials is now available in two forms:

  • as a server role - Windows Server Essentials Experience, in the Standard and Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. Installing the Windows Server Essentials Experience role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview provides you all the features and functionalities (such as dashboard, client computer backups, and Remote Web Access) of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview without the locks and limits imposed on it. For more information about this new server role, see Windows Server Essentials Experience Overview.
  • as a core Windows Server edition - Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview. As a part of your installation process, you can now opt to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview as a virtual machine using a wizard.

At Our Meeting June 4, 2013
6:00pm to 9:00pm

I am proud to announce that our very own Michael Wharton was recently awarded the Microsoft MVP for Project way to go Michael!

Michael Wharton

And speaking of Michael he will presenting PowerShell at our June 4th meeting. Here is what he plans to cover during the meeting:

Topic:   PowerShell – “Making Life Easy for the Administrator”

PowerShell is getting a lot of traction with IT professionals. Combining PowerShell, with SharePoint and SQL make for a great combination for managing systems, installations, documenting procedures and many other admin functions.  This presentation goes over the basics of PowerShell, using PowerShell for Windows Administration, SharePoint Administration and SQL Server Administration. I will do into adding ADD-IN for expanding PowerShell into SharePoint and SQL Server. Actually it’s mostly demos.  Cheers!

For those of you who may not know Michael here is a LINK to his Bio.

At Our Meeting May 7, 2013
6:00pm to 9:00pm

For our May meeting we will have another open round table discussion of whatever topics the members present bring up. If you couldn't make it last month or didn't have time to ask your questions, here is a second chance.

Also my friend and fellow SBS-MVP Amy Babinchak is going to be popping in via Lync to talk to us for a little while and make one attendee very happy. Here are the details from Amy:

You may have heard about Third Tier’s Enterprise Solutions for SMB Project but as I found out as Xchange last month, most people know it by the name SMBKitchen Crew project. Third Tier has teamed up with 7 experts to train, inform, and plan the next phase of small enterprise solutions for those of us that have been primarily SBS shops. This includes everything from client selection, hardware selection, to deployment. And yes, it also includes Cloud solutions. We’re all going to be supporting hybrid environments from now on. We’re going to do this via chat, video, papers and webinars for 12 months. Hopefully at the end we are all wiser, better trained and more informed. If you’d like me to introduce the project to your members I’m happy to call in and do so.

I’d like to provide 1 subscription free for you to give-away to a member of your group. We’re charging $180 for this project so it’s a really nice give-away for someone in your membership.

You can learn more about the project http://www.thirdtier.net/enterprise-solutions-for-small-business/ and the SMBKitchen Crew http://www.thirdtier.net/smbkitchen-crew/

So that should be enough to motivate you to come on down to ECPI for the meeting, hope to see you there,
HA

At Our Meeting April 2, 2013

Boy we just escaped the bullet on that one :>)

For our April meeting we will have an open round table discussion of whatever topics the members present bring up. This is your first chance this year to pose your tough problems to the group and see if they can help you find solutions.

Also while I have your attention, as you may know I have been trying to help get the Charlotte Chapter of IAMCP off the ground. It is the closest one to the Triad, so if you are interested in a closer connection with Microsoft you might want to consider getting involved. There is a meeting on 3/19/2013 here is a link to more info.

And last but certainly not least my friend Dave Sanders is holding his annual IT Pro Appreciation Day on the 29th of March, an all day event full of training and networking and almost free, details at the CITPG website.

At Our Meeting October 2, 2012
6:00pm-9:00pm

After our Sept 4th meeting discussing Kerio Technologies a few of our members were asking about running alternative solutions. Chuck Smith of Performance Dimensions, Inc offered to do a Linux presentation for our group. I said sure we could listen to a presentation from the dark side :>)
Here is what Chuck will be talking about and who he is, in his own words:
Thanks for the offer to share at next month’s SBS meeting.    I always enjoy an opportunity to talk about Linux and ways that it can provide a solid small business computing environment.   I would like to show the group how setting up a Linux server based network is possible and it’s benefits.

My history is 24 years of working with Unix and Linux.  I actually started with Linux about 1990(ish) and have used or explored many of the Linux distributions.   I didn’t get into the mini-distro that focus on firewall or appliances.  I was always searching for the Linux Desktop.   I started in the industry with Sun Solaris and IBM AIX.   I worked as a Unix System Admin and middleware admin for many years and until joining with Jr, I was with IBM as an Oracle team manager.    Windows was a necessary evil but at IBM, they developed a Linux Desktop that I used everyday and rarely touched a Windows desktop.  It was very exciting.

There are several possible replacements for the SBS server in the Linux space.  I would be happy to share an overview of them and explore the possibilities.

Hope you can make it, it is always good to hear what is going on, on the other side of the hill.

BTW, some of you may be aware I have been helping form the IAMCP Chapter in Charlotte and our first meeting is 9/18/2012, details on MY BLOG

At Our Meeting September 4, 2012
6:00pm-9:00pm

On Sept 4th, Michael Vanderhoff of Kerio Technologies (www.kerio.com), will be presenting on Kerio's suite of products which target SMB.  Kerio Technologies is most known for an Exchange alternative called Kerio Connect, but they also fill the space in voice, document collaboration, and security.  Many Small Business Specialists look towards Kerio for alternatives to Exchange and Sharepoint.  With the recent news of SBS going away, Kerio is becoming a topic of interest as a replacement solution for on-premise email.  With the help of JR Tatum, you all will see product demos of Kerio products, and have the chance to ask questions to both JR and Michael.

Kerio will provide food and drinks, and we look forward to seeing you all on Sept 4th! So that means I really need to know if you are planning on coming, Michael will be bringing Box Lunches for everyone, also if you have any special dietary concerns please let me know. Jason Harrison who did such a great job last month is a Kerio fan as well and said he would try and make it back out to add his experiences with Kerio.

Hope to see you all there,

At Our Meeting August 7, 2012
6:00pm-9:00pm

This month we are going to have a split format, I know you have questions after Microsoft's announcement of the end of life for SBS, a couple of days after our last meeting, so we will devote the first part of the meeting to discussing what that means to us and doing business in our space.

Then our longtime friend Jason Harrison the president of Harrison Technology Consulting will do a review of some real world alternative solutions, something his company has been doing for quite some time now.

By the end of the meeting I am hoping we can pull you all back from the ledge before you jump off, by showing you there is a road whichever way you choose to go with or without Microsoft or possibley with some hybrid of the two.

Here is the schedule for the meeting
6:00-6:30 open member interaction while folks get stuck in traffic or eat or whatever.
6:30-7:00 the sky is not falling without SBS
7:00-8:30 Jason’s presentation on alternative solutions
8:30-9:00 wrap up Q/A must be out by 9:00pm

I would recommend getting there early this month as I have a feeling we may not be able to hold off the discussion until 6:30 :>)

I will be doing a live demo of how to create a Windows 8, Windows To Go USB Drive this is one of the cool new features of the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. I will be building it on the public RC (Release Candidate) so you can go home and try it yourself after watching how it is done. Windows 8 is expected to be released later this year.

Business Intelligence: What can SharePoint 2010 do for your organization?

Presented by Charles Traywick (Principle – Infotronics)

Often mislabeled and misunderstood, SharePoint is arguably one of the most successful server level software products in recent decades. Now in its fourth major release, SharePoint 2010 offers significant features for business intelligence, collaboration and centralization of work processes (portal) and hosting of standard applications.

This session will provide an overview of the integration of business intelligence features and how to use them to make analysis easier and more fluid for decision makers. Will we explore how to connect to back end databases and expose the “intelligence” buried in standard transactional data and show how easy it is to make this data accessible for users.

At Our Meeting March 6th 2012

Ignore those rumors that there is no meeting for March, there is a regular meeting on our regular date March 6th!

I am sorry I did not get the word out sooner, I have been on the road since the 17th and buried with commitments and travel.

Our own Dick Snow of Datalytics, Inc. is going to be going over what he has learned about working with Hyper-V, VM’s and VHD’s and transferring that knowledge to us.

 Something like:

1)      how to install an OS directly into a VHD on an unpartitioned hard drive

2)      boot directly from the VHD

3)      add another VHD to the partition and have a menu at boot time to choose which OS to boot

At Our Meeting December 6th 2011

A couple of months ago I got a note from my pal Grey "Gramps" Lancaster asking me if we had any interest in seeimg him show off the new HomeServer (Gramps is the first ever HomeServer MVP) and how to run multiple instances of it in Hyper-V on an HP MicroServer. Gramps will also be showing DPM so you will get to see the full range of Microsoft backup offerings. I said of course, when do you want to come out. Well he was busy for October & November and we had StorageCraft already lined up, so he said how about December. I said you got it. So for our meeting on December 6th Gramps will be showing off a few of his favorite toys as he likes to call them :>)

Also Grey has gone through the necessary paperwork to become an OEM (not system builder but full-fledged OEM) with Microsoft and will be marketing his own brand of WSSE box to a select group of partners and will have one of the prototypes with him to show off to us.

ECPI has arranged for us to use the room with the concrete floor, so you can bring your dinner with you if you like.

Hope you can make it, should be a lot of fun!

At Our Meeting November 1st 2011

While I was at SMB Nation in Las Vegas I bumped into the gang from StorageCraft and harrassed them about neglecting us for so long and guess what, our pal Matt Rutter is coming out to do our November meeting. StorageCraft has lots of new stuff to show off, it should be a great meeting. I know a few of you have had questions lately, so bring them along and let make it an interactive session, they are the best for all of us.

StorageCraft also has a new and improved partner program, how do I know you ask, because I helped shape it :>)

Due to the rules about food in the classrooms, I turned down their offer to buy dinner, it was just going to be to much of a hassle and distraction, so eat before you come or you are welcome to eat in the lunchroom, see note below.

Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you, but you must eat them in the cafeteria, not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. If you want to eat your din din in the lunchroom get there at 6:00PM. The actual meeting will start at 6:30pm.

At Our Meeting October 4th 2011

I will still be on the road between SMB Nation and the SMB MVP Roadshow, and Kay Tatum has once again stepped up to be your stand in group leader, thank you Kay!

For October, one of our members John Zielke would like to lead an open discussion of favorite apps y'all use. So please bring a list of your top 5-10 favorite apps or tools and be prepared to discuss what you like about them. This type of open discussion always ranks near the top when I pole you guys about what kind of meetings you would like, so here is your chance, sorry I will not be there, I like these as well.

Also Kay will have some exciting news to share with you at the meeting, she is under strict NDA until then.

At Our Meeting September 6th 2011
How do you manage your privileged passwords?
Come to the meeting and share horror stories and talk about best practices using solutions by
Thycotic Software Logo

The IT industry typically focuses on network security, endpoint security, firewalls, vulnerability testing, and intrusion detection. Unfortunately, passwords are often overlooked. Policies are created for end user passwords to ensure complexity and regular changes, but what about privileged passwords? Privileged accounts can do practically anything on the network with no accountability and the passwords are often known by many IT team members.  Privileged (admin/root) accounts are privileged system level accounts that do not correspond to an end user. Examples of privileged accounts include Windows local administrator accounts, UNIX root accounts, firewall admin accounts, application/service accounts, and router local accounts – and they all have passwords.

Jonathan Cogley is the Product Manager and CEO at Thycotic Software which is headquartered in Washington DC and makes enterprise password management tools including Secret Server.  Secret Server is a web-based password vault for storing privileged passwords. Over 30,000 IT administrators worldwide trust Secret Server with their infrastructure passwords.  Secret Server also integrates with AD so you can apply permissions for access to passwords and it can even change passwords for servers, network devices and workstations automatically across the network.

Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you, but you must eat them in the cafeteria, not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. If you want to eat your din din in the lunchroom get there at 6:00PM. The actual presentation will start at 6:30pm.

At Our Meeting August 2nd 2011

We will be hosting a stop of the International SMB MVP Community Roadshow sponsored by HP & Microsoft and produced by SBSmigration.com. This is a going to be a big meeting for us and we will be taking advantage once again of the Regus Conference Center next door to ECPI. You will need to register for this event as we will likely sell out and I want to make sure you don’t get turned away at the door, so please register early. Registration is open at smbmvptour.com/register  . You can get more information about the tour at smbmvptour.com. Food will be provided by the sponsors. Here is the news blurb;

The Triad SBS Group is proud to host a stop of the International SMB MVP Community Roadshow for our August meeting. This is a chance to hear first-hand from our peers in the field how they are implementing the New SMB Stack from Microsoft and see it actually demo’d on current shipping HP Hardware. This is not a canned sales pitch, this is a live demo by some of my fellow SMB MVP's on real world scenarios they are deploying today. Each stop on the tour will be a little different as the presenters change as the tour progresses and they also have to flexibility to shape the discussion to fit the local audience. The format will follow our normal 3 hour meeting, 30 minutes to eat (food supplied by tour sponsors) and mingle, 120 minutes of presentation and 30 minutes of networking to close the meeting. Presenters: we are lucky to have two outstanding MVP’s presenting at our event, first possibly the most awarded person in SMB IT Amy Babinchak of Harbor Computing & Third Tier and also SBS MVP Cliff Galiher who is an independent consultant and also works for Third Tier in his spare time.

(Note: If you are a group leader and would like to look into having the tour stop at your group see http://www.sbsmigration.com/it-pro-community/signup.php and follow the instructions there. Also watch for a direct mailing from Jeff Middleton  with more details.)

After last month's meeting a few of us were talking in the parking lot (the famous meeting after the meeting) about who used the advanced features of LogMeIn and Dick Snow offered to do a demo of some of them including Ignition . So this month he has agreed to do that demo and then we will have a random access session after that where you can ask your questions of the group and/or share any tips you find useful. Yes I know it is the day after the holiday, but that is when you are supposed to get back to normal, so I hope to see many of you there being normal :>)

Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you, but you must eat them in the cafeteria, not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. If you want to eat your din din in the lunchroom get there at 6:00PM. The actual meeting content will start at 6:30pm.

We would took a look at Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials previously known as code name Breckenridge. This is a server based on the common Colorado technology under the hood for SBS 2011 Essentials (Aurora) and Windows HomeServer 2011 (Vail). If you are looking for a backup solution for your SBS 2008 or SBS 2011 Standard this will fit the bill. Microsoft heard us when we said we needed a solution that was not called HomeSever and stepped up to the plate and delivered WSSE. We will also have some time to discuss current issues you may be having.

Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you, but you must eat them in the cafeteria, not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. Hi Mr. Goodman,

We have an exciting opportunity coming up at ECPI.  On Friday, June 3 from 11am - 2pm we will hold our annual Advisory Board Meeting.  We invite industry professionals to join us in a round-table discussion on what you think students should do to prepare themselves for success in the corporate world.  This includes technologies that they should learn and skills that you think will be beneficial for them to have.

Areas of interest include:

- Web Design

- Electronics

- Network Security

At Our Meeting May 3rd 2011

A couple of weeks ago I  presented Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 to Amy's brand new IT Pro Group see blog post and it was very well received. I figured I would do that same presentation for my own group for our upcoming May meeting . I would not want my peeps to feel cheated :>)

Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you, but you must eat them in the cafeteria, not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. It will take me a while to set everything up so if you want to eat your din din in the lunchroom get there at 6:00PM. The actual presentation will start at 6:30pm.

Areas of interest include:

- Web Design

- Electronics

- Network Security

- Mechatronics

- Business Administration

Lunch will be provided to all participants.  Please feel free to forward this email amongst those in the SBS Group, or any professional that qualifies to attend this event.  A response via email would be greatly appreciated!  Any questions, just let me know.

At Our Meeting April 5th 2011

Post Meeting Update: We had a pretty good turnout with the weather and all, a few of you who could not get to the meeting asked about recordings. Their will be a virtual event on 4/13/2011 where you can get the content you missed, register at
https://partner.microsoft.com/us/40158719 and it will also be recorded if you miss that one as well, of course you can't ask questions if you wait for the recording so try to make the live virtual event on the 13th.

When I warned you last month that this meeting would sellout fast, even I was surprised at just how fast. The SBS 2011 Partner Road Show is going to be doing our April meeting we had already booked 58 attendees well past the 30 seat limit of our regular meeting space. I went back to Microsoft and they have authorized some additional funding for a larger space so we will be meeting in the building next door to ECPI. If you have not registered yet, we have 2 slots still open, but cut off is today 4/4/2011 at 2:00pm Eastern. Please register at https://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032477494&Culture=en-US for more details CLICK HERE

Please Note the location for the April meeting is the Regus Building
7800 Airport Center Dr, Ste 401
Greensboro, NC 27409

This is the building directly to the right of ECPI sharing the same parking lot. Suite 401 is towards the back of the building.

At Our Meeting March 1st 2011

I was out of town at MVP Summit and MVP Nation so Kay has offered to run the meeting which seems appropriate since JR will be doing the presentation. Just think of it as an evening with Performance Dimensions, Inc

Here are the descriptions of the two applications JR will demo'd

SmoothWall Express Firewall
The SmoothWall GPL project was founded in the summer of 2000 by Lawrence Manning (Principle Code Author) and Richard Morrell (Project Manager). Their goal was to create a Linux distribution that could convert a redundant PC into a hardened internet firewall device. The goals of the project can be summed up as:

1. Be simple enough to be installed by home users with no knowledge of Linux

2. Support a wide variety of network cards, modems and other hardware

3. Work with many different connection methods and ISPs from across the world

4. Manage and configure the software using a web browser

5. Run efficiently on older, cheaper hardware

6. Develop a supportive user community

7. Use sponsorship from SmoothWall Limited to further these goals

At Our February Meeting

It had been quite a while since we had a member to member meeting, and these have been very popular in the past, so for February you brought your tough problems and the group put on their thinking caps and solved them for you with a little give and take. All questions related SMB Business and/or Technology were fair game.  I also gave a sneak peak at the new Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 and now some of you are as anxious for it to RTM as I am,

At Our January Meeting
Happy New Year!

Update: Wow what a turnout, we had close to 200 folks in attendance. Dave put out a great spread of food and the CITPG members were great hosts! Karl put on a great presentation and yours truly won the Intel Hybrid Server, no there was no fix, it was a honest drawing in front of the whole crowd :>)

Due to some major miscommunications (probably my fault) between, Karl Palachuk, Intel, Dave Sanders and myself it has turned out that our Intel Hybrid Cloud meeting is happening on the right date in the wrong city. I spoke to Dave and Karl and everyone is bending over backwards to work this out. So based on your wiliness to help as well, we are going to make it a joint meeting between CITPG and TSBSG and meet in the Charlotte location on our meeting date.

Karl has asked that you please register on HIS SITE to confirm your attendance and be eligible to win the Grand Prize, a Lenovo TS200v Server. See HIS FLYER for more specifics about the event.

For more information about the venue and directions please see the CITPG WEBSITE  it says food is $7.00 but Intel is picking up the tab. If you plan to eat please make sure to click the CITPG link above and check the box for food so Dave has an accurate count for the chef. Yes that's right CITPG has it's very own chef, see what you can do with a huge membership! It will say the cost is 7.00, but worry not, Intel is sponsoring the food completely, as long as you register!

I am sorry about the requirement for dual registration for this event, but it is out of my control.
Keep an eye on our website for last minute updates!

Thank You Again To Everyone For Your Flexibility With The January Meeting Arrangements.

Those who do the work, and those who take the credit.
Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.
