Our Next Meeting
is June 4, 2013
Topic:
PowerShell – “Making Life Easy for the Administrator”
For our May meeting we will have another open round table discussion of whatever topics the members present bring up. If you couldn't make it last month or didn't have time to ask your questions, here is a second chance. Also my friend and fellow SBS-MVP Amy Babinchak is going to be popping in via Lync to talk to us for a little while and make one attendee very happy. Here are the details from Amy: You may have heard about Third Tier’s Enterprise
Solutions for SMB Project but as I found out as Xchange last month, most
people know it by the name SMBKitchen Crew project. Third Tier has teamed up
with 7 experts to train, inform, and plan the next phase of small enterprise
solutions for those of us that have been primarily SBS shops. This includes
everything from client selection, hardware selection, to deployment. And
yes, it also includes Cloud solutions. We’re all going to be supporting
hybrid environments from now on. We’re going to do this via chat, video,
papers and webinars for 12 months. Hopefully at the end we are all wiser,
better trained and more informed. If you’d like me to introduce the project
to your members I’m happy to call in and do so. You can learn more about the project
http://www.thirdtier.net/enterprise-solutions-for-small-business/ and
the SMBKitchen Crew
http://www.thirdtier.net/smbkitchen-crew/
Boy we just escaped the bullet on that one
:>) Also while I have your attention, as you may know I have been trying to help get the Charlotte Chapter of IAMCP off the ground. It is the closest one to the Triad, so if you are interested in a closer connection with Microsoft you might want to consider getting involved. There is a meeting on 3/19/2013 here is a link to more info. And last but certainly not least my friend Dave Sanders is holding his annual IT Pro Appreciation Day on the 29th of March, an all day event full of training and networking and almost free, details at the CITPG website.

My history is 24 years of working with Unix and Linux.
I actually started with Linux about 1990(ish) and have used or explored many
of the Linux distributions. I didn’t get into the mini-distro
that focus on firewall or appliances. I was always searching for the
Linux Desktop. I started in the industry with Sun Solaris and
IBM AIX. I worked as a Unix System Admin and middleware admin
for many years and until joining with Jr, I was with IBM as an Oracle team
manager. Windows was a necessary evil but at IBM, they
developed a Linux Desktop that I used everyday and rarely touched a Windows
desktop. It was very exciting. There are several possible replacements for the SBS
server in the Linux space. I would be happy to share an overview of
them and explore the possibilities.

September 4, 2012 On Sept 4th, Michael Vanderhoff of Kerio Technologies (www.kerio.com), will be presenting on Kerio's suite of products which target SMB. Kerio Technologies is most known for an Exchange alternative called Kerio Connect, but they also fill the space in voice, document collaboration, and security. Many Small Business Specialists look towards Kerio for alternatives to Exchange and Sharepoint. With the recent news of SBS going away, Kerio is becoming a topic of interest as a replacement solution for on-premise email. With the help of JR Tatum, you all will see product demos of Kerio products, and have the chance to ask questions to both JR and Michael.
Kerio will provide food and drinks, and we look
forward to seeing you all on Sept 4th!

August 7, 2012 This month we are going to have a split format, I know you have questions after Microsoft's announcement of the end of life for SBS, a couple of days after our last meeting, so we will devote the first part of the meeting to discussing what that means to us and doing business in our space. Then our longtime friend Jason Harrison the president of Harrison Technology Consulting will do a review of some real world alternative solutions, something his company has been doing for quite some time now. By the end of the meeting I am hoping
we can pull you all back from the ledge before you jump off, by showing you
there is a road whichever way you choose to go with or without Microsoft or
possibley with some hybrid of the two.
Here is the schedule for the meeting
I would recommend getting there early this month
as I have a feeling we may not be able to hold off the discussion until 6:30

July 3, 2012 I realize this meeting is the day before the 4th of July so I figured I better come up with something exciting to get y'all to show up. I think I have found just such an exciting topic. I will be doing a live demo of how to create a Windows 8, Windows To Go USB Drive this is one of the cool new features of the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. I will be building it on the public RC (Release Candidate) so you can go home and try it yourself after watching how it is done. Windows 8 is expected to be released later this year. response of consumerization of IT from Microsoft. It's an all-new touch
interface and full of exciting new features and capabilities. Yung Chou, Sr.
IT Pro Evangelist from Microsoft, will show how you can quickly become
productive using Windows 8. This is to reimagine Windows for the future and

Business Intelligence: What can SharePoint
2010 do for your organization?
Presented by Charles Traywick (Principle –
Infotronics)
Often mislabeled and misunderstood, SharePoint is arguably one of the most
successful server level software products in recent decades. Now in its
fourth major release, SharePoint 2010 offers significant features for
business intelligence, collaboration and centralization of work processes
(portal) and hosting of standard applications.
This session will provide an overview of the integration of business
intelligence features and how to use them to make analysis easier and more
fluid for decision makers. Will we explore how to connect to back end
databases and expose the “intelligence” buried in standard transactional
data and show how easy it is to make this data accessible for users.

At Our Meeting December 6th 2011 A couple of months ago I got a note from my pal Grey "Gramps" Lancaster asking me if we had any interest in seeimg him show off the new HomeServer (Gramps is the first ever HomeServer MVP) and how to run multiple instances of it in Hyper-V on an HP MicroServer. Gramps will also be showing DPM so you will get to see the full range of Microsoft backup offerings. I said of course, when do you want to come out. Well he was busy for October & November and we had StorageCraft already lined up, so he said how about December. I said you got it. So for our meeting on December 6th Gramps will be showing off a few of his favorite toys as he likes to call them :>)
Also Grey has
gone through the necessary paperwork to become an OEM (not system builder
but full-fledged OEM) with Microsoft and will be marketing his own brand of
WSSE box to a select group of partners and will have one of the prototypes
with him to show off to us. ECPI has arranged for us to use the room with the concrete floor, so you can bring your dinner with you if you like. Hope you can make it, should be a lot of fun!

At Our Meeting November 1st 2011 While I was at SMB Nation in Las Vegas I bumped into the gang from StorageCraft and harrassed them about neglecting us for so long and guess what, our pal Matt Rutter is coming out to do our November meeting. StorageCraft has lots of new stuff to show off, it should be a great meeting. I know a few of you have had questions lately, so bring them along and let make it an interactive session, they are the best for all of us. StorageCraft also has a new and improved partner program, how do I know you ask, because I helped shape it :>) Due to the rules about food in the classrooms, I turned down their offer to buy dinner, it was just going to be to much of a hassle and distraction, so eat before you come or you are welcome to eat in the lunchroom, see note below.
Please remember you are welcome to bring food or drinks with you,
but
you must eat them in the cafeteria,
not in the classrooms anymore, due to new carpeting. If you want to eat your
din din in the lunchroom get there at 6:00PM. The actual meeting will start
at 6:30pm. Meeting Space compliments of

I will still be on the road between
SMB Nation
and the SMB MVP
Roadshow, and Kay Tatum has once again stepped up to be your
stand in group leader, thank you Kay! For October, one of our members John Zielke would like to lead an open discussion of favorite apps y'all use. So please bring a list of your top 5-10 favorite apps or tools and be prepared to discuss what you like about them. This type of open discussion always ranks near the top when I pole you guys about what kind of meetings you would like, so here is your chance, sorry I will not be there, I like these as well.
Also Kay will have some exciting news to share with you at the
meeting, she is under strict NDA until then.

At Our Meeting August 2nd 2011 We will be hosting a stop of the International SMB MVP Community Roadshow sponsored by HP & Microsoft and produced by SBSmigration.com. This is a going to be a big meeting for us and we will be taking advantage once again of the Regus Conference Center next door to ECPI. You will need to register for this event as we will likely sell out and I want to make sure you don’t get turned away at the door, so please register early. Registration is open at smbmvptour.com/register . You can get more information about the tour at smbmvptour.com. Food will be provided by the sponsors. Here is the news blurb; The Triad SBS Group is proud to host a stop of the
International SMB MVP Community Roadshow for our August meeting. This is a
chance to hear first-hand from our peers in the field how they are
implementing the New SMB Stack from Microsoft and see it actually demo’d on
current shipping HP Hardware. This is not a canned sales pitch, this is a
live demo by some of my fellow SMB MVP's on real world scenarios they are
deploying today. Each stop on the tour will be a little different as the
presenters change as the tour progresses and they also have to flexibility
to shape the discussion to fit the local audience. The format will follow
our normal 3 hour meeting, 30 minutes to eat (food supplied by tour
sponsors) and mingle, 120 minutes of presentation and 30 minutes of
networking to close the meeting. Presenters: we are lucky to have two
outstanding MVP’s presenting at our event, first possibly the most awarded
person in SMB IT Amy Babinchak of Harbor Computing & Third Tier and also SBS
MVP Cliff Galiher who is an independent consultant and also works for Third
Tier in his spare time. (Note: If you are a group leader and would like to look into having the tour stop at your group see http://www.sbsmigration.com/it-pro-community/signup.php and follow the instructions there. Also watch for a direct mailing from Jeff Middleton with more details.)

We would took a look at
Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials
previously known as code name Breckenridge. This is a server based on the
common Colorado technology under the hood for SBS 2011 Essentials (Aurora)
and Windows HomeServer 2011 (Vail). If you are looking for a backup solution
for your SBS 2008 or SBS 2011 Standard this will fit the bill. Microsoft
heard us when we said we needed a solution that was not called HomeSever and
stepped up to the plate and delivered WSSE. We will also have some time to

Due to some major
miscommunications (probably my fault) between, Karl Palachuk, Intel, Dave

happening on the right date in the wrong city. I spoke to Dave and Karl and
everyone is bending over backwards to work this out. So based on your wiliness
to help as well, we are going to make it a joint meeting between CITPG and TSBSG
and meet in the Charlotte location on our meeting date.
Karl has asked that you please register on
HIS SITE to confirm your attendance and
be eligible to win the Grand Prize, a Lenovo TS200v Server. See
HIS FLYER for more specifics about the
event.
For more information about the venue and directions please see the
